Ayr United, just a season after narrowly avoiding the relegation playoff position in the Scottish League One, managed to finish in the runners up position in the league last season, and after victories over Peterhead and Stranraer in the playoffs found themselves promoted to the second tier for the first time since 2011.

This has been followed by two wins and one defeat in their pre-season friendlies, taking their form record to six wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last ten outings.

Ayr United will feel quietly confident about their chances in this rebooted Scottish League Cup though. They have been drawn in a group with Hamilton Academical, Edinburgh City, Livingston, and St. Mirren.

A few of these will be very tough fixtures, including this one on Saturday, but on their day they will feel that they can get something out of at least one of their difficult fixtures to potentially give them a 2nd place finish in the group stage.

Hamilton Academical managed to avoid the drop from the Scottish Premiership last season, but they certainly won’t be happy with their performance throughout the campaign. They finished with ten fewer points than the season before and dropped from 7th place to 10th in the table, just above the relegation playoff position.

Their end of season form did improve a bit though, meaning they have currently won four, drawn three, and lost six of their last 12 competitive matches. They have managed to win four of their last seven away days though, whilst Ayr United have lost four of their last seven on home turf.

This, combined with the disparity between the two sides in terms of quality, means that my prediction is for a Hamilton Academical Win on Saturday, and odds of 4/5 for this outcome look good value to me. I’m backing a 2-1 correct score prediction at 15/2 as well.

Hamilton Academical have won 3, drawn 1, and lost 3 of their last 6 meetings with Ayr United.

Hamilton Academical have won 57% of their last 7 away games, whilst Ayr United have lost 57% of their last 7 at home.
