Barnsley have had a very good pre-season so far, although they were beaten by Everton at Oakwell last time out. However, four straight wins before that defeat was an indication of the progress being made by Paul Heckingbottom, with the Tykes preparing for their return to the Championship by snapping up Walsall’s prolific Wales international Tom Bradshaw.

The contrast could not be sharper with Hull, who have not strengthened their squad over the course of the summer, leading to the resignation of Bruce as a result of unhappiness at the lack of investment from the club’s unpopular owners, the Allam family. Hull now face going into the Premier League with a small squad and a temporary manager in the form of Mike Phelan, who has never led a team and is regarded as a coach rather than a manager.

Hull shook off their off-the-field issues to beat Scunthorpe last time out but they are certainly vulnerable, especially as Barnsley’s pre-season preparations are further ahead as the Championship starts before the Premier League’s big kick-off. It is tempting to side with the hosts here, but instead the goals market is of more interest. Both teams have good firepower and it should be an entertaining clash at Oakwell.

Our tip for this game is therefore over 2.5 goals at 3/4 with bet365, while the 12/1 on offer with the same bookmaker on a 2-2 draw is also a very appealing price here.

Hull City have 39 wins compared to Barnsley's 40 in this fixture, so the head-to-head record is very close. Hull have not won at Oakwell since 2008, however, while Barnsley have won the last two meetings between the teams.

Hull City and Barnsley were both promoted last season, with the Tigers returning to the Premier League and the Tykes rising up to the Championship. Both clubs won in the play-offs.

Tom Bradshaw is Barnsley's biggest signing of the summer so far and he will get the chance to shine against Premier League opposition.

Mike Phelan takes temporary charge of the Tigers following the shock departure of Steve Bruce, but Hull's squad is so small Phelan is very restricted when it comes to team selection for this game.
