Derry City’s plan to try and shrink the ever increasing gap between them and the top two teams in the League of Ireland Premier Division didn’t go too well last time out. They went into the game against league leaders Dundalk with 12 points between them, and after 90 minutes there was 15 points between them and an air of humiliation about Derry City.

They lost the game 5-0, partly because of Dundalk’s pure dominance over the majority of the league and partly thanks to centre back Ryan MdBride being sent off halfway through the first half. In fairness to McBride, Dundalk were already 2-0 up by that point.

This ended Derry City’s six match unbeaten streak, but their overall form is still looking pretty good. They have won four, drawn two, and lost one of their last seven in all competitions, which puts them in 3rd position in the table. They are two points ahead of Shamrock Rovers below them, although the 4th placed side have a game in hand. Dundalk and Cork City look out of reach already though, with the gap to them being 15 points and nine points respectively.

Either way, Derry City are having a better time of things than Longford Town. The visiting side finished in a mid-table spot in last season’s Premier Division, but after 18 games of the 2016 season they are rock bottom of the table.

Longford Town have managed just eight points from their 18 games so far, leaving them 12 adrift of the relegation playoff position that Wexford Youths occupy and five off safety.

Their 4-3 defeat to Dundalk last time out made it four defeats and a draw in their last five matches, and they haven’t won in the league since the beginning of March. 12 of their 17 league matches since then have ended in defeat.

Longford Town’s defence has been disastrous so far this season. They have conceded 40 goals in their 18 games, which has made for some high scoring affairs. Four of their last five away days have resulted in at least three goals, and there have been 17 goals netted in their last four away games. They have failed to score in five of their last eight as well.

This has resulted in eight of their last 13 matches ending with them losing by more than a single goal margin, so my prediction is for a Derry City -1.5 Asian Handicap Win at 2.000 along with a 3-0 correct score prediction at 7/1.

Derry City and Longford Town have each won one, lost one, and drawn four of their last six meetings.

Longford Town have lost 62% of their last 13 games by more than a single goal margin.

Goalkeeper Shaun Patton and right winger Gareth McGlynn are both sidelined through injury, whilst centre back Ryan McBride is suspended after being sent off against Dundalk.
