Dundalk have been absolutely dominant in the League of Ireland Premier Division for the past couple of seasons. They won the league for the first time in nearly 20 years in 2014, and then romped to the title again last season. This season is still underway, but they sit six points clear at the top of the table with a huge 46 points from their opening 18 matches.

Due to this, their form record looks impressive. They have won ten of their last 11 matches in all competitions and have won six on the bounce at Oriel Park.

Dundalk’s European record is a little less impressive though. Their foray into the Champions League last season saw them eliminated at this stage of the competitions after they lost 2-1 to BATE, but prior to that their only recent continental appearance was a Europa League first qualifying round win in 2010.

FH have had a more consistent recent involvement with Europe’s top competitions thanks to their continued success in the Iceland Urvalsdeild. They won the Iceland top flight title for the first time since 2012 last season though, meaning they qualified for the Champions League rather than the Europa League.

Their last foray into the Champions League saw them eliminated in this round against Ekranas, and despite six attempts at Champions League qualifying they have never made it past the second round of qualifying.

But FH are in decent form at the moment. They are unbeaten in ten matches in all competitions and have won seven of them, leaving them atop the Urvalsdeild table with 21 points from ten matches.

These two sides are fairly well matched, and my prediction is that it will come down to the home advantage of Dundalk on Wednesday. The Irish champions are in sensational form at home and will be high on confidence after scoring a huge 11 goals in their last three matches, so I’m backing a Dundalk win at 4/6 alongside a 2-1 correct score prediction at 15/2.

Wednesday will mark the first time that these clubs have met.

Dundalk have won 91% of their last 11 games and 100% of their last six home matches.
