Botafogo RJ vs Flamengo RJ Brasileiro Série A Match Preview And Prediction - July 17, 2016

This could be a decent game with both sides perhaps doing a little better than they might have expected. Botafogo’s first season back in the top flight is certainly going better than their last one at this level and encouragingly for them they seem to be improving while a few other teams are in freefall. They’ve only suffered 2 defeat in their last 8 games and come into this match following a 2-1 home win against Santa Cruz and 0-0 draw at Coritiba last weekend. Their last 4 Serie A home games have resulted in 2 wins and 2 draws so they should approach this with confidence.

Flamengo though are having their best season for several years and come into the match inside the top six and in touch with the leaders. They put in perhaps their most polished performance yet last time out, seeing off a talented Atletico Mineiro side 2-0 thanks to a brace from Felipe Vizeu. They are though almost infuriatingly inconsistent so you can never really confidently back them. Fla have won 3 of their last 5 games but in that period they have also suffered a second half capitulation at Corinthians in their most recent away game when they lost 4-0 and a 2-1 derby defeat to a fairly unimpressive Fluminense outfit.

There is very little to choose between the sides according to the bookies here. It is though worth considering that Flamengo have only won back-to-back league games once in the last 10 months and with Botafogo looking pretty solid on their own patch, the value just lies with the home side in this Rio de Janeiro derby.

Botafogo are warming to the task of top flight football and have put in both strong offensive and defensive showings in the past few weeks. You can back Botafogo Draw No Bet at 4/5.

Botafogo have won 2 of the 3 most recent meetings, drawing the other.

Botafogo have won 4 of their last 7 home games, losing just one. Flamengo have only won successive league games once in their last 27 matches in Serie A.

Botafogo made wholesale changes in the cup in midweek but their top performers should return here including Sassa who is currently 4th in the Serie A scoring charts.

Flamengo made several changes last week following their 4-0 loss to Corinthians and most of them paid off in a big way. Felipe Vizeu scored twice and Fernandinho was a threat from out wide so both players should keep their places here.
