Corinthians vs São Paulo Brazil Serie A Match Preview And Prediction - July 18, 2016

Things are looking pretty good for defending champions Corinthians under their new coach Cristóvão Borges. Their 2-0 win at Chapecoense last weekend was their 4th victory in a row and cemented the idea that the Sao Paulo giants are still the team to beat this season. Their last 3 victories have all been impressive with polished all-round displays giving them 2 victories on the road by 2-0 margins either side of a convincing 4-0 home win against a Flamengo side that is having a good season. Their impressive form is ominous for the rest of the league and they will be relishing the prospect of picking up another win against their city rivals here.

Things aren’t quite as rosy for Sao Paulo although they received a timely morale boost last weekend when they cruised to a 3-0 win over bottom club America Mineiro. However they have a suffered a big disappointment in the Copa Libertadores over the past week or so. A 2-0 Semi Final 1st Leg home defeat left them with a mountain to climb as they headed to Medellin for their 2nd leg against Atletico Nacional on Thursday. They put in a spirited display and briefly led through Jonathan Calleri but ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 defeat on the night and a 4-1 aggregate loss. They must now refocus on the league and try and improve on their current 8th place.

Given they’ve had a long journey back from Colombia to contend with, the odds look even more stacked in Corinthians favour in what is usually a blood and thunder derby match. They have a stunning home record in the league and have won 21 of their last 24 home Serie A matches, drawing the other 3. They’ve also won their last 4 home games against Sao Paulo including a crushing 6-1 win last season so everything points to a home win here.

Corinthians have won 4 of the last 6 meetings between the clubs and all of their last 4 home games against Sao Paulo.

Corinthians have won 86% of their home games in 2016 in all competitions. Sao Paulo have lost 55% of their away games in Serie A over the past 12 months.

Corinthians aren't expected to change much given the form they are in.

Jonathan Calleri who was the tournament top scorer in the Libertadores and key playmaker Ganso have both this week left the club. Sao Paulo are also still without several players due to injury.
