Viborg vs Esbjerg Danish Superliga Match Preview And Prediction - July 29, 2016

If it wasn’t for the restructuring of the Danish Superliga this season, Viborg could well have found themselves in a relegation battle last term. They ended the season in 8th position, but there was just three points between them and 10th placed AGF, which would have seen them struggling against the drop had the Superliga not been expanding to 14 teams rather than 12.

Judging by their opening two games of this season they’re not in for a much happier time either. They opened the campaign with a 4-0 thrashing at home to Nordsjaelland and followed it up by losing 2-1 to AGF. This made it five defeats in a row including their pre-season friendlies, so it’s not looking like a great time to be a Viborg fan.

Stretching back into last season they have only won two of their last 11 outings, losing all of the other nine of them. At home they have managed one win in their last 11 and lost five of their last six.

Esbjerg were certainly saved by the restructuring of the top flight last season. They ended the campaign second from bottom with just 30 points from their 33 games, which would have seen them drop to the second tier in a normal season. Fortunately for them it wasn’t a normal season, but like their opponents the new season is showing no more signs of promise.

They have lost both of their opening games 4-0, although the strength of their opposition has to be noted. They have had to play Brondby and current champions Copenhagen, both of whom are expected to challenge for the title this year.

Going back into last season Esbjerg have lost ten of their last 13 matches, winning the other three. Away from home they have lost six of their last seven and won just one of their last 17.

Both of these sides have been awful defensively recently, with Viborg conceding six in their first two games and Esbjerg shipping eight. This should give both teams’ attacks something to be hopeful for. Esbjerg have scored in six of their last eight away games as well, whilst Viborg have in five of their last eight home games. With both teams’ attackers playing against drastically out of form defensive outfits I can see both teams finding the net, and odds of 4/5 for that outcome look good to me. I fancy Viborg to get the win though, so I’m going for a 2-1 Viborg win at 8/1 for my correct score prediction.

Esbjerg have won three, drawn one, and lost two of their last six meetings with Viborg.

Esbjerg have seen both teams score in 75% of their last eight away games, whilst Viborg have in 50% of their last eight at home.

Left winger Osama Akharraz is out until December with his cruciate ligament rupture.

Right midfielder Jeppe Andersen is a few weeks away from a return from his shoulder injury.
