Grêmio vs São Paulo Brasileiro Serie A Match Preview And Prediction - July 25, 2016

This game sees two of Brazilian football’s powerhouses meet and two sides that finished in the top four last season. This time around though it is Gremio who are currently enjoying much the better campaign. They head into the weekend in 3rd place and just 5 points off the top although they did suffer a setback last time out when they were beaten 4-2 by struggling Sport Recife despite a brace from Pedro Geromel. They’d won 3 in a row prior to that though and have won 6 of their 7 home games this term so will still head into this game with plenty of confidence.

The same can’t really be said of Sao Paulo who have endured a campaign ravaged by injury problems. That contributed to their Copa Libertadores Semi-Final defeat but they’ve managed to keep picking up the odd result in the league and will have been encouraged by their showing last weekend when they drew 1-1 away to big city rivals Corinthians. This will be another serious test of their metal as they try to improve on their current 9th place and put a run together that could help fire them back into at least top four contention.

Sao Paulo do have a very good recent record against Gremio but right now the Porto Alegre side look much the more convincing outfit. They’ve not been as defensively solid as they were last year but the likes of Geromel and Luan have given them real attacking threat and they should cause the visitors plenty of problems here. Goalscoring has been an issue for Sao Paulo and they’ve only managed more than 1 goal on 4 occasions this season so far.

You could see them nicking a goal here but on home soil Gremio are so strong, they ought to have just enough to beat an unconvincing Sao Paulo side and you can back Gremio to Win 2-1 at 15/2.

Sao Paulo have done the double over Gremio in each of the last two seasons.

Gremio average 2.57 points per game at home. Only leaders Palmeiras can better that. Sao Paulo have scored just 0.75 goals per game on the road so far.

Miller Bolaños looks set to get a start here with Luan and Walace away on international duty with Brazil.

Rodrigo Caio is away on international duty while Ytalo has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a knee problem.
