Montrose had a relatively successful season in the Scottish League Two last term, that is when compared to the previous season. They only just avoided relegation from Scottish football’s 4th tier in 2014/15 after they won the relegation playoff, so their 8th place finish in last season’s instalment will have felt like a trophy win.
However, they will be hoping to start pushing towards the top half of the table in the coming season, but first they have a tough Scottish League Cup group to endure. They will play against Ross County, Raith Rovers, Cove Rangers, and Alloa Athletic before their league season begins, and in all likelihood they will be unable to find their way out of the group stages in this revamped Scottish League Cup.
Montrose did prove difficult to beat towards the end of last season though. They have only lost three of their last 11 in all competitions, winning three and drawing the remaining five. However, when they do lose it tends to be a landslide, which has been illustrated by a 5-0 loss to Annan Athletic and a 3-0 loss to East Fife.
Ross County managed to get some unlikely silverware last season when they took themselves all the way to the Scottish League Cup final, including a 3-1 win over Celtic in the semi finals. Their final against Hibernian was a tight affair, even after Ross County opened the scoring halfway through the first half. An equaliser 45 minutes in kept the game tied until the dying moments, which was when Alex Schalk decided to pop up with a winner for Ross County.
In addition to their Scottish League Cup success, Ross County also enjoyed a rather fruitful league campaign. They managed to finish in the top half of the Scottish Premiership after flirting with relegation the season before. This was largely thanks to an excellent first half to the season, but in the second half of the season their form dropped off considerably. They have only won three of their last 11 matches in all competitions, losing four.
The long season obviously took it’s toll on Ross County towards the end of the campaign, and I think after their summer break we can expect them to be back to their best. My prediction is for the visitors to get a comfortable victory on Saturday, so I’m backing a Ross County -1 Handicap Win at attractive looking odds of 4/5, and I’m going for a 3-0 correct score prediction at 15/2 as well.
