Former top-tier veterans FC Kaiserslautern are starting to look like a permanent fixture in the Bundesliga 2. Last season’s 13th place finish was their worst season since their 2007/2008 campaign ten years ago and an out-flux of talent over the summer has dampened their chances of improving going forward. Coach Norbet Meier is also yet to make a significant impact at the club. While his managerial spell at Dusseldorf between 2008 and 2013 was successful enough, his slipping win percentage – 39% at Armenia Bielefeld, 20% at Darmstadt, and 33% at Kaiserslautern – is not particularly inspirational.
Eintracht Braunschweig just missed out on top flight football for this term after a 3rd place finish last season – Eintracht failed to beat Wolfsburg in the relegation play offs. An early bust out from the DFB Pokal two weeks back means that Braunschweig have only the league to focus on for the rest of the season – another run at promotion could be on the cards. Eintracht are also in better form than it looks above, losing just 3 of their 20 Bundesliga 2 matches in 2017 (W10 D7 L3).
Surprisingly, Kaiserslautern are slight favourites with the bookies here, despite taking just one point from their first three matches of the new season (D1 L2). For us though, backing the visitors “draw no bet” has to be the way to go. Kaiserslautern may have held the joint 2nd best defense in the league last season, but the movement of players away from the club throughout the summer, including core members of their defensive unit (see team news), means that the South Germans are simply not as strong at the back this time around. Kaiserslautern have already conceded 6 goals so far this season – that represents 18% of the total goals they conceded over the whole of last season – and their lack of attacking talent means Braunschweig shouldn’t have much trouble on their travels.
Regarding a correct score prediction, Kaiserslautern’s poor scoring record has seen them score just one goal over their opening three matches this season. Braunschweig, on the other hand, have goals to spare, finding the back of the net five times over the same number. Our prediction: a 2-0 Eintracht Braunschweig win.
