Corinthians vs Flamengo Football Match Preview And Prediction - July 4, 2016

Cristóvão Borges is less than a fortnight into his reign as Corinthians boss having replaced Tite and he’ll be pretty content with his start with 3 wins from 4 so far. They are looking for a 3rd straight win here having got the better of Santa Cruz and America Mineiro already this week. That 2-0 win on the road in Belo Horizonte in midweek was a big one given all their problems so far this season have been away from home where they’ve already suffered 4 defeats. However given their home form is as strong as ever and their rivals haven’t really been able to capitalise on their slip-ups, Corinthians are still riding high in 2nd place and looking good to mount another title challenge having won the league last year.

Flamengo fans too have reason for optimism. They are in 5th place currently only 2 points fewer than their opponents and have won 3 of their last 4 away games. It’s not been particularly pretty but they have ground out many good results with 5 of their 6 wins so far coming thanks to 1-0 scorelines. They are a bit short on attacking quality though compared to some of the other likely challengers so Flamengo may struggle to really keep pace with the top sides as the season goes on.

If they are to get anything from this, they are going to have to be very clinical in front of goal as it’s hard to see them creating many clear chances away from home against a strong Corinthians defence. The Sao Paulo club have a formidable home record. They are unbeaten in over 12 months at their own ground in the league and have won all of their last 5 Serie A home matches.

The departure of Tite had the potential to really upset them but the ship has been steadied well by his successor and it just feels like it is business as usual for Corinthians now. That invariably means home wins and you can back Corinthians to win at 4/5 here and also extend their great home record against Flamengo.

Head To Head
Corinthians have won their last 7 home matches against Flamengo in all competitions.

Stats
This match sees the best two defences in the league meet. Corinthians have let in just 10 goals so far, only 1 fewer than their opponents.

Team News

No changes are expected. Vilson is back from suspension but may struggle to break into a defence that performed well in midweek.

Ederson has dislodged Everton from the starting line-up and should keep his place here. Cesar Martins has returned to Benfica after his loan spell ended.
