Dinamo Tbilisi vs Alashkert Champions League Football Match Preview And Prediction - July 13, 2016

This is a local derby in European terms and it should be a competitive tie. Alashkert have been involved in 1st Qualifying Round action over the past fortnight. They drew 0-0 away to Santa Coloma of Andorra but won the 2nd leg comfortably 3-0 at home to set up this tie. They are relative newcomers to European football after the club was revived in 2011 but did play in the Europa League last season where they won a qualifier against St Johnstone. They’ve improved since then though and won the Armenian League last year to qualify for this competition and won all of their final 5 games of last season.

This will be a tougher test than their 1st Qualifier though. Dinamo Tbilisi are the biggest club in Georgia and won the title for a record 16th time last season. They won 25 of their 30 matches to cruise to the league crown but haven’t had much joy in European competition of late. They’ve only won 1 of their last 8 matches in Europe and were convincingly beaten 4-0 on aggregate by Kazakh side Aktobe the last time they played in the Champions League at this stage in 2014.

They have prepared extensively for this game though. They’ve played 4 friendlies, mostly against other sides in this competition including Dinamo Kiev and Legia Warsaw over the past couple of weeks although they only won 1 of the games against Maccabi Haifa.

The Georgians are favourites to win the game and have a formidable home record in Georgia but it is likely to be tight. Including their recent friendlies there have been under 2.5 goals in 5 of Dinamo’s last 6 matches. Alashkert were cautious even in their 1st Leg in Andorra two weeks ago with the game ending goalless so against stronger opposition here a similar approach is almost guaranteed.

Therefore goals are likely to be at a premium and backing there to be under 2.5 goals at 31/40 is surely the way to go here.

20 year old Giorgi Papunashvili and 21 year old Davit Volkovi have just returned from loan spells and could feature in the squad.

Alashkert will be without suspended forward Norayr Gyozalyan who saw red on early on the 1st Qualifying Round win last week.
