Ponte Preta vs Sao Paulo Football Match Preview And Prediction - July 4, 2016

Right now this is a mid-table clash with Sao Paulo only 1 point better off than Ponte Preta. Sao Paulo would have been hoping for better but given the injuries and suspensions they’ve had to deal with, 8th place is by no means a disaster and they are not actually that far back on the leaders. They come into this game following a morale boosting 2-1 win over Fluminense in midweek but they were well-beaten by state rivals last weekend when they went down 3-0 at Santos.

They are well used to the trip to Ponte Preta also, given the sides meet regularly in the Paulista. Ponte Preta have enjoyed the better of the recent meetings on this ground and will fancy their chances again here. They come into this match after an excellent 3-0 win away from home against Santa Cruz with William Pottker putting in a fine display and scoring twice. He also scored in the draw at Vitoria last weekend however inconsistency is Ponte Preta’s biggest nemesis. It is less than 10 days since they capitulated at home losing 4-0 to Cruzeiro.

Here though they are set to receive a major boost from the unlikely source of Sao Paulo coach Edgardo Bauza. He is set to rest several key players from his already depleted squad here with the Semi-Final of the Copa Libertadores coming up on Wednesday. They are already in a position where they simply cannot afford injuries so it seems that game has clearly been prioritised over this one. Ponte Preta achieved a solid mid-table finish last term and they are clearly at a similar level again. Even with their full strength side Sao Paulo would have found this a tricky game but without so many big players you have to fancy backing Ponte Preta to win at Evens.

Head To Head
Ponte Preta have won 3 of their last 4 home games against Sao Paulo. They won 1-0 when the sides last met in February.

Stats
Ponte Preta have won 7 of their last 12 home games in the league. Sao Paulo have only won 2 of their 20 away games in 2016. They have played many supposedly weaker sides during that period.

Team News

No changes expected from Ponte Preta. William Pottker, who netted twice in the midweek win is likely to be their biggest threat again.

Key men Michel Bastos, Maicon and Jonathan Calleri are all being rested ahead of the Libertadores semi-final. Ganso is out injured.
