It’s derby day in Sao Paulo state; as Corinthians host Santos in the “Classico Alvinegro”. The encounter has over 100 years of history behind it and it’s fair to say more than three points are on the line.
Nonetheless, said points will be Corinthians’ boss Fábio Carille main priority, as he sees to maintain his side’s promising start to the new campaign. Now, back in front of their own fans they will be looking to pick up their first home win of the season.
Looking to stop that, and a fourth consecutive defeat at the Arena Corinthians is Santos. However, fans of last season’s runner up will not have too much faith in securing a result, with “Peixe” having lost 2 of their opening 3 and star man Lucas Lima’s injury absence continuing.
Santos lacked ideas in last week’s clash with Cruzeiro without the Brazilian international playmaker, and things went from bad to worse when what looked to be a disappointing 0-0 draw transformed into defeat via an 83rd minute visiting goal.
We really like the look of the hosts picking up another win here. They’ve looked very solid so far this year and much improved on the side that didn’t live up to expectations last year.
Santos are not a bad side, and will begin to pick up points eventually, but given the absence of Lima and their miserable record at their state rivals, we don’t see it coming here.
