It’s “Classico Alvinegro” time in matchday four of the Brazilian Serie A, as Corinthians host Sao Paulo state rivals Santos late Saturday night.
It’s derby day in Sao Paulo state; as Corinthians host Santos in the “Classico Alvinegro”. The encounter has over 100 years of history behind it and it’s fair to say more than three points are on the line.
Nonetheless, said points will be Corinthians’ boss Fábio Carille main priority, as he sees to maintain his side’s promising start to the new campaign. Carille looked to have a difficult job on his hands when he arrived, inheriting a team that had sunk down to upper mid table following a 2015 title win, but he’s done a good job after putting his own stamp on the squad, lifting the Campeonato Paulista in pre-season and taking 7 points from the opening 3 games.
While “Timão” are far from play swashbuckling football, one cannot deny their style has not been effective in recent weeks, having won both of their recent games on the road 1-0 at Vitoria and Atletico Goianiense respectively. Now, back in front of their own fans they will be looking to pick up their first home win of the season.
Looking to stop that, and a fourth consecutive defeat at the Arena Corinthians is Santos. However, fans of last season’s runner up will not have too much faith in securing a result, with “Peixe” having lost 2 of their opening 3 and star man Lucas Lima’s injury absence continuing.
Santos lacked ideas in last week’s clash with Cruzeiro without the Brazilian international playmaker, and things went from bad to worse when what looked to be a disappointing 0-0 draw transformed into defeat via an 83rd minute visiting goal.
We really like the look of the hosts picking up another win here. They’ve looked very solid so far this year and much improved on the side that didn’t live up to expectations last year.
Santos are not a bad side, and will begin to pick up points eventually, but given the absence of Lima and their miserable record at their state rivals, we don’t see it coming here.
Backing a 1-0 home win really does look an excellent bet at 5/1. Corinthians have scored exactly one goal in their last 5 consecutive home games, as well as in 7 of the last 8 at home, having won both of their last games by a score of 1-0, whilst that’s also been the scoreline between themselves and Santos on the last two occasions in the Arena Corinthians.
Head To Head
The sides have met in official competition on 283 occasions. Corinthians have won 113, Santos 91, with the remaining 79 games ending all square. Corinthians have won their last three at home to their rivals.
Corinthians vs Santos Stats
Corinthians have scored exactly 1 goal in each of their last 5 home games, as well as in 7 of the last 8 at the Arena Corinthians. Santos have conceded exactly 1 goal in 3 of their last 5 away games. Watch Live stream free Click Here | Link 2#
