Ajax Amsterdam vs AA Gent Club Friendly Match Preview And Prediction - July 16, 2016

Ajax were close runners up in the 2015-2016 Eredivisie, just 2 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven and a clear 19 points above 3rd placed Feyenoord. 2nd place grants Ajax qualification to the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, the fixture for which has not yet been set. Ajax have drawn 1, against Dutch 4th tier side AFC, and lost 1, against Austrian Football First League side FC Liefering, of their two club friendlies played so far this summer.

Gent also finished 2nd and 4 points behind Club Brugge in their league (Belgian Pro League), which was enough to qualify them for the “Championship play-off”. Unfortunately, Gent didn’t perform too well in the playoffs, finishing 3rd overall (W3 D3 L4). Gent have, however, been very busy since late June and have already played 5 pre-season friendlies, winning 3 and drawing 2 of these.

Ajax wiped the floor with Gent the last and only time the two teams have met in the first round of the Europa League in 2000. Ajax won 9-0 on aggregate, with a 6-0 win in the away leg and a 3-0 win in the home leg. Circumstances are, however, clearly different for this pre-season friendly. Both teams to score has been a winning bet for the last 2 friendlies of both Ajax and Gent AND both sides have averaged more than 2 goals per game over the same period. Combining this analysis with the statistics below, we expect both teams to score to be the safe bet and Ajax to win 3-2 to be a top value correct score bet.

Ajax and Gent have met just 2 times before in the 1st round of the Europa League in 2000. Ajax won 9-0 on aggregate, winning the first away leg 6-0 and the second home leg 3-0.

Ajax have scored at least 2 goals in both of their pre-season friendlies. Gent have scored at least 1 goal in all 5 of their 5 pre-season friendlies. Over 2.5 goals were scored in 60% of both Ajax and Gent's pre-season friendlies.

Ajax have made a few transfers so far this summer including the signing of 2 Colombians, Mateo Cassierra (€5.5M) and Davinson Sanchez (€5M), from Deportivo Cali and Atletico Nacional respectively. Defender Mike van der Hoorn and striker Viktor Fischer both leave Ajax for the Premier League heading to Swansea and Middlesborough respectively.

Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels has left Gent after 3 seasons, signing for Championship side Newcastle United over the summer.
