AS Trencin vs Legia Warsaw Champions League Match Preview And Prediction - July 28, 2016

Slovak First League winners Trencin made their debut in the Champions League last season, but their foray into Europe’s elite didn’t last very long. They were eliminated at the first time of asking as Steaua Bucharest beat them 4-3 on aggregate in the 2nd Qualifying Round. They have at least managed to improve on that this season though, beating Olimpia on away goals in a thrilling 6-6 aggregate match to make it to the 3rd Qualifying Round.

They followed this success with a 3-0 win over Senica at the weekend in their 2nd Slovak First League match of the season too, which made up for the 2-1 defeat they suffered in the opening game of the domestic season. Overall their form record isn’t looking particularly good though, with just two wins in their last six games and three defeats.

Legia Warsaw’s form isn’t looking much better though. They have drawn both of their opening two domestic games this season and have won just one of their last six, although they have only lost twice.

The visitors 2nd Qualifying Round tie wasn’t quite as entertaining as Trencin’s either, with them drawing 1-1 at Zrinjski and winning 2-0 away in a match they were strong favourites for. They will now be aiming to continue their involvement in the Champions League as they try to make the group stages of the competition for the first time since 1995.

Legia Warsaw have managed to make it to the group stages of the Europa League though, including last season when they failed to get through a group including Napoli, Club Brugge, and Midtjylland.

Trencin have shown already this campaign that they aren’t afraid to go on the attack, which naturally leaves them a bit open at the back . Legia Warsaw have a quality that Olimpia lack though, and should be able to exploit these defensive holes more effectively. However, the visitors are in poor form and have struggled on the road in the Champions League in years gone by.

Trencin will know that the home leg of this tie is crucial for them, and if they want to progress it’s likely that they’ll need a win. My prediction is for them to go on the attack from the outset, and considering 12 of their last 14 games overall and seven of their last nine at home have seen at least three goals scored I think odds of 6/5 for Over 2.5 Goals look good value. I’m backing them to edge the victory with a 2-1 correct score prediction at 10/1 as well.

Wednesday will mark the first time Trencin and Legia Warsaw have met.

Trencin have seen Over 2.5 Goals in 86% of their last 14 matches and 78% of their last nine at home.

Holding midfielder James Lawrence is out with a cut he sustained last week.

Right winger Guilherme is sidelined with a cut too.
